While the Graduate School confers degrees after each term (Spring, Summer, and Fall), Commencement at UNC Charlotte is held just twice annually, once in May and once in December. Students who graduate in Summer or Fall participate in the December Commencement ceremony. Spring 2020 will mark the first all-Graduate School Commencement Ceremony, which will take May 8 at 10:00 AM. (There is no longer a separate Hooding Ceremony.)
PARTICIPATION IN THE CEREMONY
In order to participate (or "walk") in the Commencement ceremony, students must have successfully completed all degree requirements and submitted all required forms by the published deadlines, including the Online Graduation Application (please refer to the Registrar's Calendar for these deadlines). Though doctoral graduates receive their diploma on the day of Commencement, please note that master’s diplomas and graduate certificates are not distributed at Commencement; these students should expect to receive their diploma or certificate 6-8 weeks after the ceremony. (Be sure to update your email and mailing address through my.uncc.edu in order to receive important information updates as well as your diploma or certificate.)
- Detailed instructions on the line-up, procession, and ceremony can be found on the University's Commencement website.
- Graduate caps and gowns are available at the Campus Bookstore several months prior to Commencement. Your student fees cover this basic regalia. For doctoral graduates, UNC Charlotte also offers custom regalia, which you must order and pay for through our special link to Oak Hall. The deadline to order custom regalia is April 3. Regalia that is ordered by this deadline will receive a 10% discount. For more information about custom regalia, see the Commencement site.
Please look for more information on Commencement and related events in your inbox beginning in March.
